Tire Today

We know you've heard it before, but it is crucial enough to bear repeating. The tires on a vehicle are the only link to the road surface. And that's why the tires on your vehicle are of critical importance. Buying new tires can be a confusing and daunting task made even more difficult by the vast variety of makes and styles currently on the market.

Choosing the tire that's right for your vehicle involves numerous considerations. Two primary concerns should be addressed. First, know your expected needs and driving uses. Secondly, find a reliable tire shop where a salesman you trust can help you find the type of tire that best fits your needs.

There are a few questions you can ask yourself before you enter a tire store. Tread life considerations--how long do you expect a set of tires to last? Wet weather requirements: most of us live where inclement weather is a factor, at least part of the time. For those people in the Snow Belt, some kind of four-season type of tire will be the minimum necessary. Speed rating: even in states with a 75 mile an hour speed limit and limited traffic, are you honestly willing to spend the higher prices to buy a set of tires speed rated over 150 mph? Doubtful that you will need those types of tires on your vehicle. Save some money and go for an H-speed rated tire that's still good for 130 mph.

Also be concerned about ride quality. In general, a low-profile tire such as a 50 or 40-series looks great, but can be harsh over bumps and potholes when compared to a 55 or 60. Lower profile tires have stiffer sidewalls which improves handling, but increases the harshness of the ride. A final consideration may be the noise factor. Some tread designs are noisier than others and varies significantly between brands and tread designs. Particularly for highway driving at higher speeds, noise can be a major nuisance.
